paris“Paris has officially declared its candidacy to host the games. Let’s make the Olympic and Paralympic dream happen together!” said the Mayor at this week’s launch of the Paris campaign.

It was on social media that Paris declared its candidacy for the 2024 Olympics Games earlier this week. A little after 12:30pm on Tuesday June 23rd, this tweet marked the moment the French capital officially joined the race for the games:

“We’ve started the marathon!” declared Tony Estanguet, three-time Olympic canoeing champion and head of the bid committee alongside Bernard Lapasset. “France has a lot of talent and the French athletes are at the heart of this project. We will host these games!” he added.

150 French athletes – all Olympic medalists – were gathered at the French headquarters of the International Olympic Committee, next to Charléty stadium (13th arrondissement), to hear the candidacy announced. As well as Mayor Anne Hidalgo, the President of the Regional Council, Jean-Paul Huchon, and a crowd of guests and journalists, Teddy Rinner, David Douillet, Nicolas Batum, Laura Flessel, Muriel Hurtis and Marie-José Pérec were among the many athletes present.

“Our bid is based on solid foundations”

“All of Paris is behind this bid,” announced Mayor Hidalgo, adding that it was a bid “based on solid foundations”.

After Boston, Hamburg and Rome, Paris is the 4th city to join the race for the Games in 2024.  A successful bid would bring the Olympics back to Paris for the first time in 100 years.
