Istomin, Baghdatis Advance To Nottingham Semi-finals

denis-istominDenis Istomin will face Marcos Baghdatis in the Nottingham semi-finals after saving one match point to beat Leonardo Mayer.

Denis Istomin saved one match point to knock out fourth seed Leonardo Mayer 6-3, 6-7(8), 7-6(6) on Thursday at the Aegon Open Nottingham.

In his fifth tour-level quarter-final, the 28 year old from Uzbekistan fired 13 aces and saved all seven break points faced in the two hour, 18-minute battle.

Istomin advanced to his third tour-level semi-final and will face Marcos Baghdatis, who earlier beat Simone Bolelli 6-4, 6-4.

The 30-year-old Cypriot faced no break points and capitalised on two of his own nine break point chances in the 75-minute match. Baghdatis has yet to drop a set en route to the semi-finals. His path to the final four included a win over top seed and World No. 7 David Ferrer on Tuesday.

Istomin and Baghdatis will meet for the third time on Friday. The duo is level at 1-1 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series.

Top Seeds Ousted, Second Seeds Reach Final
Chris Guccione and Andre Sa knocked out top seeds Marcel Granollers and Leander Paes to reach the semi-finals. The Australian/Brazilian tandem notched a 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 victory to set a meeting with Eric Butorac and Colin Fleming.

Second seeds Pablo Cuevas and David Marrero defeated Lukasz Kubot and Max Mirnyi 7-5, 1-6, 12-10 in 84 minutes to advance the final.
